Child Obesity

We at Juice Powerhouse believe, that in a little way we may contribute to the battle of overcoming child obesity. Our product, Juiceator is aimed at children and it promotes a healthy life style.

The young population of the whole western world has a frightening weight problem and it won’t go away unless we take actions urgently.

Child obesity. You heard about it, you read about it. It became a phrase within days, once the variety of tragic statistics hit the tabloids, such as “children choking on their own fat” and “doomsday report on a nation eating its way to an early grave” chillingly declared by the Daily Mail, May 27 2004.

Although, we associate 5-11 years old girls and boys with the problem, it is important not to forget the adolescent generation that represents the age group of 12-17 years and experience the same problem.

So, is this epidemic disaster all to do with kids not eating the right stuff?

Well, yes it is. We keep seeing school children rushing on and off buses after school, carrying gigantic whoppers in one hand, a can of coke in the other and not to mention the chocolate bars, which stick out of their jacket packets.

Do we need a scapegoat?

We need a solution. There are talks that the government will clamp down on fast food and sugary drink advertisements. Certain supermarket chains will introduce traffic light systems on food packaging to warn us about the quantities of fat, sugar and excess calories. It will certainly be a start.

On the other hand, shouldn't we try to give crash courses to our children on nutrition in carrots and spinach and perhaps swap the chocolate bar stands at the check out counters for fruit and veg. Could we change our ways so quickly? No. No one gets fat in one day and looses it the next.

The answer we all know is education both on behavioral and habitual patterns. To pass the right messages to kids at a young age is very important, as changes will become more and more difficult at an older age. The most critical links in combating child obesity are families and schools.

Are we doing enough?

It is likely, that we are. Parents are more switched on now days than ever before. There are more TV programs that challenge society in many ways including this issue. Newspapers shout about the problem. Schools change their school dinners and teach youngsters of changing their way about food, drinks and the importance of regular exercise.

Should we really worry about the future of our children?

I don’t think so. I’m optimistic and so we should be. Once, a western society decide to solve and overcome certain problems it is left to face, the chances are it will succeed, but it will not happen overnight. If we all do our part and do it right, we will live to see no threatening headlines in newspapers, but it will take a little time.
